INQUIRY INTO INFORMAL SPACES
The project takes place shortly after a residency at the Institute for Provocation in Beijing, supported by Iaspis, the Swedish Arts Grants Committee. It is thus in continuity with a research about informal spaces, defined as common places able to sense a “territorial intimacy”1, one that would extend beyond the lock of the domestic sphere. The project firstly focused on the process caring about an existing context, rather than applying a preconceived strategy. It is articulated in two times, with no specific hierarchy. The residency starts as an inquiry into the yet existing walls to look after the multiple ways inhabitants of the factory reinvent the uses and the program of its rational architecture. This attentive survey takes the form of discussions, drawings and representations, but also leads to take part in these informal spaces, as collective rituals, as eating, exercising, praying, talking, smoking can be. The informal spaces are here another layer of the plan of the factory, and can be defined as multiple tactics2, manifesting the appropriation of each inhabitant of the factory. In a second part of the project, an intervention at the smallest scale infiltrates the uses in the factory to suggest an informal activity and support it. A table made out of tubular steel -as all the assembly lines- is foldable et rotates in order to enable big collective lunches in many configurations of spaces, and can easily be folded in one of the lockers. ENQUÊTE SUR LES ESPACES INFORMELS
Le projet a lieu peu de temps après une résidence à l'Institute for Provocation à Pékin, soutenu par Iaspis, le comité suédois des bourses pour les arts. Elle s'inscrit ainsi dans la continuité d'une recherche sur les espaces informels, définis comme des lieux communs capables de ressentir une « intimité territoriale »1, qui s'étendrait au-delà du verrou de la sphère domestique. Le projet s'est d'abord concentré sur la démarche soucieuse d'un contexte existant, plutôt que d'appliquer une stratégie préconçue. Il s'articule en deux temps, sans hiérarchie particulière. La résidence commence comme une enquête sur les murs encore existants pour s'occuper des multiples façons dont les habitants de l'usine réinventent les usages et le programme de son architecture rationnelle. Cette enquête attentive prend la forme de discussions, de dessins et de représentations, mais conduit aussi à prendre part à ces espaces informels, comme des rituels collectifs, comme peuvent l'être manger, faire de l'exercice, prier, parler, fumer. Les espaces informels sont ici une autre couche du plan de l'usine, et peuvent être définis comme de multiples tactiques2, manifestant l'appropriation de chaque habitant de l'usine. Dans une seconde partie du projet, une intervention à plus petite échelle infiltre les usages en usine pour suggérer une activité informelle et la soutenir. Une table en tube d'acier -comme toutes les chaînes de montage- est pliable et pivotante afin de permettre de grands déjeuners collectifs dans de nombreuses configurations d'espaces, et se replie facilement dans l'un des casiers.
