Manufacura ou la poétique de l’outil: entre astuce, bidouille et système D.

Inspirée et nourrie par les échanges dans l’atelier de production, notre recherche s’est orientée vers des outils assemblés dans l’usine ayant échappé au protocole de standardisation. Des pièces uniques, inconformes, élaborées par celui qui en a l’usage au plus proche de son besoin. Seul l’artisan peut façonner son outil. Plus précisément ces objets nous relient à ce reflexe archaïque, pratique et intuitif, qui habite encore certains corps de métiers. Souvent avec les moyens du bord, souvent faute de mieux, ces bricolages ingénieux, éminemment personnels, détonnent dans un paysage industriel normé. De la main sachante à l’invention créative, la permanence de cette démarche d’ajustement révèle l’intimité du lien entre le travailleur et la matière travaillée. Le projet Manufactura propose une typologie de ces innovations discrètes, tour de main personnel face à la machine, mémoire des inventeurs du quotidien.

Manufactura, or the poetry of the tool: tricks, hacks and shortcuts.

It can take time to bring some tools to the point of standardisation. At the present moment, their development is generally formalised by a process of continuous improvement - a field recognised by the annual Kaizen Awards.
Inspired and nurtured by exchanges in the production workshop, our research focusses on factory-assembled objects that escaped the Kaizen protocol. Only the artisan can make his own tools, and these products are unique, top-quality pieces developed to meet the needs of the very people who fashioned them.
More precisely, these objects connect us with the practical and intuitive ancient principles on which some trades are still based- sometimes because that is all that is possible with the tools at hand, but just as often because nobody has come up with any better way of doing them.This ingenious and deeply personal practice of improvisation is a stark contrast to the general norms of industrial production. The durability of this approach, in which creative invention is realised through the skilled hand alone, reveals the intimate link between the worker and his materials.The project offers a typology of these humble innovations, personal sleights of hand which testify to the memory of their everyday inventors.
