13 Years of Social Sensibility R & D Department
On November 4, 2023, the German Cultural Center Beijing Goethe-Institut (China) will launch the exhibition "Working - Thirteen Years of the Socially Sensitive R&D Department". The exhibition is jointly planned and presented by SPL and the Socially Sensitive R&D Department .
In 2011, the Socially Sensitive R&D Department was established in Beijing Bernard Control Equipment Co., Ltd. As a department in the company, it is not productive in the general sense. Instead, it is based on research, carries out a series of observations, exchanges and interactions around the workers in the production workshop, and encourages them to be spontaneous on a voluntary basis. to practice art. The department was initiated by Italian artist/researcher Alessandro Rolandi in 2010 after meeting Guillaume Bernard, CEO of Bernard Industries, and conducted a nine-month research residency at the Beijing factory.
In an efficiency-oriented work environment, the Socially Sensitive R&D Department attempts to mobilize individual and collective creativity by introducing some "distraction" factors. At first, these "disturbing" factors were artists invited by Li Shan to stay in the factory. They enter the production workshop to communicate and interact with the workers, and create together with the workers in the factory. Workers also took inspiration from artists and began creating their own works. In 2014, after the artist Zhao Tianji joined, the Social Sensitivity R&D Department officially determined two work paths: the "Artist Temporary Residency" and the "Work, Live" project. "Work, Work" is a series of artistic practices that encourage workers to create independently. These creations grow organically from the long-term exchanges between the Socially Sensitive R&D Department and workers. Workers become the subjects of creation, and themes and materials are derived from their interests and observations in work and life. Then in 2015 and 2020 respectively, the working methods of the Socially Sensitive R&D Department in Beijing entered Bernard's factories in Paris and Milan.
When the subject of creation is no longer a professional artist, and the environment of creation is no longer the studio and the contemporary art system, what kind of works will we see? What kind of people and stories will we see? Based on the above thinking, this exhibition will focus on the "Work, Work" project and review the 13-year artistic practice of the Socially Sensitive R&D Department in the Bernard Factory in Beijing. The exhibition will present the performances, sculptures, photography, installations and other works created by thirteen workers, as well as the personal stories behind the creations, as well as the collective interaction and mutual assistance in the factory. These creations take place in the ongoing dialogue between Zhao Tianji, Li Shan, Blandine de La Taille (Paris) and their workers, and also take place at the intersection of work and life, individual and society, meaning and meaninglessness.
