Lulu Li in conversation with Bernard Controls plant manager Gilles Uhrweiller / Beijing 2011

website Lulu Li’s intervention in the factory is conceived around witty humor, intelligent provocation and sharp irony. Turning herself and her practice into a “mirror” of both the factory system and the previous artists’ projects, she questions ourselves as human beings in the first place; she touches the weakest points in our relational and hierarchical system and confront all of us with the unsolvable contradictions between what we do and what we say, where we stand and where we pretend to be. A Mao Tze Tung quote printed in transparent letters on the production glass cube confirms Ma Yongfeng previous bold tags but at the same time, sounds like a warning to everyone who is in a position of authority: both the artists and the managers should remember that “those who lives in a glass house should not throw stones”. Lulu’s micro-speakers won the right to listen to music once a week for the workers during working time, yet the fact to keep and implement this privilege is left to the workers’ will and capacity to claim it. She then brought over her old cd collection as a present to be shared between all the factory employees: “you have the music and the device to play it, .. it’s up to you” Lulu’s art is participatory in a critical and engaging way. It does not presume that the mere fact to gather the audience into an open dialogue whatsoever is in itself meaningful; it confronts the viewer with the necessity to make a choice and the consequences that come with. Lulu’s intervention leaves behind utopia and ideology and faces the fact that any human activity needs constant questioning and negotiation. It is in the capacity to accept and deal with antagonism and differences instead of suffocating it artificially, that lies the only possibility to build a respectful and mature social bond. Lulu’s works create a tension in the individual sphere and within the social contract, because it unveils its fragility and points out its most important regulation tool: individual responsibility. When she assembles, paints, packs and storages the plant director Gilles Uhrweiller as if he was himself an “actuator” or when she asks us to chose between a t-shirt that say “human being” and another one that says “talented human being” , Lulu makes us realize that, ultimately, we all “produce” who we are and the way we interact with the others. Art cant’ change things, but for a moment might push us to suspend our judgement , step back and just see the other.

Lulu Li in conversation with plant manager Gilles Uhrweiller / Beijing 2011
