Beijing Project n.18

Yaowei

UNTITLED (RECIPROCAL MASSAGE)

Yaowei is a young independent artist who graduated from CAFA in Beijing and studied Installation. Her practice quickly shifted from being gallery-oriented to focusing on public space and social intervention. She is one of the founding members of the @party collective, whose provocative and controversial street actions have become well-known in Beijing between 2012 and 2013.
For the Social Sensibiity R&D Program she has chosen to mix sharp humour and sensorial experience to induce the people working in Bernard Controls Asia to explore an unusual situation of unplanned intimacy and complicity. A spinning wheel randomly chooses two people’s names; they will have to give each other a massage respectively at 10:00 am and at 4:00pm switching the roles of patient and doctor. This constructed situation bypasses working hierarchies and structures but also social etiquette, as in fact allow people who are eventually linked only by a working environment to exchange a moment suspended between subtle irony and uncomfortable shyness. Presence, cultural identity and social bonds and tested through a rather odd physical interaction that become an instrument to suspend the reality of working life and reconnect with human nature in a demanding and challenging way.

Pékin Projet n.18

Yaowei

SANS TITRE (MASSAGE RÉCIPROQUE)
